Wheat Free

Can I keep on my wheat-free diet?

It's been several years now, and I'm still struggling.

Two years ago, I started this group to help me.

When I look in the kitchen for something to eat, I see bread, and I want to eat it.  Of course, it is wheat bread, what else?  I have wheat crackers and wheat hamburger buns.  The hot dog buns are wheat, too.  Wheat thins, shredded wheat, spaghetti, macaroni, and my favorite granola, all contain wheat.  How does a person live a wheat-free life in a wheat infested world?  Vinegar can be made from wheat.  To get wheatfree vinegar, you have to use a rice or apple cider vinegar.  That rules out pickles, relish, ketchup, and other foods processed with vinegar.

Some foods are naturally wheatfree, such as fruits, apples, oranges, apples, and grapes.  Milk is wheatfree unless you are having ice cream and the manufacturer decides to add a thickening agent that contains wheat.  Then again, a lot of people who try to live wheatfree are also trying to live dairy free, too.

My family can eat wheat which makes my journey even that more difficult.  They try to be helpful, but it isn't fair to make them give up wheat when I'm the one who is allergic.  Some people can eat spelt, but I don't think it would work for me.  I get hives from wheat among other miserable symptoms.  I can have gluten, so I am able to have oats.  My favorite oatmeal cookies, though, contain wheat flour.  I could try to make a substitute for the wheat flour, but I haven't tried it yet.

I love sandwiches, but most wheat-free breads are too crumbly or icky tasting to make a decent sandwich.  I like grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.  Both of these foods have wheat in them.

I've tried wheatfree breads such as tapioca bread and rice bread.  I'd rather eat a soggy piece of cardboard than either of those.
